Light sleep

Light sleep is a phase of the sleep cycle that falls between wakefulness and deep sleep. It accounts for the majority of total sleep time in adults, approximately 50–60% of the sleep cycle.

During light sleep, the body begins to slow down and relax, body temperature drops, muscles relax, and heart rate and breathing slow. Although the sleeper is asleep during light sleep, he or she can be easily awakened by noises, movements, or interruptions.

Despite its name, light sleep is not “less good” or “less important” sleep. It actually plays several important roles in health and well-being, including consolidating memory, processing emotions, regulating metabolism, and strengthening the immune system.

The quality of your bedding, especially your mattress, can affect the duration and quality of your light sleep. A good quality, comfortable mattress, like our alba Original mattress , which features a 100% natural latex core, can help optimise your light sleep. The alba Pearl mattress is designed to minimise pressure points and promote spinal alignment, which helps maintain uninterrupted, deep sleep, reducing the number of times you spend in light sleep during the night.
