Sleepwalking, commonly called sleep walking, is a sleep disorder characterized by episodes of walking or other activities while asleep. These activities can be as simple as sitting up in bed or as complex as leaving the house or driving a car. Sleepwalking is more common in children than adults, and most sleepwalkers tend to grow out of it by puberty.
The sleepwalking episode usually occurs during the deep stages of non-REM sleep, in the first half of the night. Sleepwalkers often have their eyes open and a fixed gaze, and may appear awake even though they are actually asleep. They usually do not remember the episode the next morning.
The exact causes of sleepwalking are not well understood. However, there appears to be a genetic component, and sleepwalking can be triggered by lack of sleep, stress, fever, or alcohol. Certain medications can also cause sleepwalking episodes.
In most cases, sleepwalking is not dangerous in itself, but the risk of injury is high due to the activities performed during the episode. If sleepwalking is frequent or leads to potentially dangerous situations, medical consultation is recommended.
While sleepwalking is not directly related to mattress quality, a comfortable sleep environment can contribute to deeper, more restful sleep. A high-quality mattress like our Alba Pearl mattress , made from 100% natural latex, can provide optimal comfort and support for a good night's sleep.
